HISTORY
Landmark on the Sound is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of Washington. Eighty-five years ago, the Masons decided to build a retirement home for themselves. They chose a monumental, commanding ridge overlooking Puget Sound in town Zenith, what is now the waterland city of Des Moines, Washington. They then selected a legendary Northwest architect who, only three years earlier, had completed the palatial Paradise Inn at Mt. Rainier.
Crafted of slate and copper, Terra Cotta and Terrazzo, marble and stained glass, the “castle on the hill” opened its grand oak doors in 1926.

Ever since the Masons established this stately and spectacular property in 1926, it’s been a source of security, independence and friendship to the people who’ve resided here.
Today, this 27-acre campus, as well as the historic Landmark building, is undergoing a complete renovation and expansion. Living options will offer beautiful Apartment and Woodland homes. A wealth of services and amenities such as an all-season aquatic center, an on–campus market, dining choices and wellness initiatives will ensure that you’ll enjoy every advantage of contemporary living when you make Landmark on the Sound your home.
