Safe and SOUND
Opening Our Doors To The Community
For two straight days, from December 14-15, 2006, a merciless and deadly windstorm blasted Western Washington. With winds reaching more than 60 mph, it was the worst windstorm to hit the region in 13 years. Overall, 1.5 million people were without power for several days and a state of emergency was called.
Landmark On The Sound saw the opportunity to help when no one else literally had the power to do so. As a Washington Freemasons-sponsored community, we are always mindful of our obligation to provide security, independence and enduring Fraternal friendship to not only our own members, but the community at large.
Revving up our generator, we opened our doors to the community within the first 24 hours, providing warm, private-room shelter to more than 160 displaced area residents in need of a safe place to ride out the storm – and storm damage. The American Red Cross stepped in, working with Landmark staff and Federal Way volunteers, to oversee the provision of more than 640 meals and 1,600 snacks served during the nine days Landmark On The Sound served as an emergency shelter.
To demonstrate their gratitude for our “true spirit of community service,” the City of Des Moines passed a resolution honoring Landmark On The Sound and the City of Federal Way issued a formal Proclamation, dedicating January 2, 2007 as “Landmark On The Sound Day”! We are deeply honored by this recognition.
